Skiing in Syterbyn

Syterbyn is being developed into a new ski area in Hemavan—featuring varied terrain from the open views of the high mountains down through the birch forest and on toward the valley. Modern slopes and lifts are being designed here to make skiing more accessible for both families and experienced skiers.

The area and location
Syterbyn will be Hemavan's next major ski area, with varied terrain ranging from open mountain peaks down through the characteristic mountain birch forest and on toward the valley. New slopes are being shaped along natural lines, built for both families and more experienced skiers. The first slope opened back in the 22/23 season and connects the top of the Kungsliften lift with the Hemavan Gondola valley station—a long, continuous run without any flat sections.
Skiing in Hemavan and Syterbyn
Hemavan is one of Sweden's most established ski resorts, offering a unique combination of open mountain terrain, forest skiing, and expansive views. It features a varied alpine selection with several lifts, a wide network of slopes, and a vertical drop that provides great skiing for both beginners and experienced skiers.
Directly adjacent, Syterbyn is emerging—a new area where skiing, housing, and the town center are planned as a cohesive system. This creates the foundation for a modern mountain destination where skiing is a natural part of everyday life, all year round. Alpine, cross-country, and ski touring in the same mountain range
Hemavan offers a complete skiing experience. There are alpine slopes above and below the tree line, a snow park, children's areas, and free-riding on the open mountain. For those who want to venture further into the terrain, there are ski touring and off-piste opportunities directly connected to the lift system.
Cross-country skiing is an equally important part of the area. There are dozens of kilometers of groomed tracks, both in sheltered forest terrain and on open mountain trails with views of valleys and peaks. The tracks connect Hemavan with the surrounding mountain world, providing access to both short loops and longer excursions in classic settings.
The combination of alpine, cross-country, and mountain touring makes Hemavan one of the most complete ski resorts in northern Sweden, with excellent snow conditions and a long season.
Syterbyn - the next step in Hemavan's ski development
In Syterbyn, the skiing is being planned from the ground up, with a direct connection to Hemavan's existing lift system. Several new lifts are planned for the area, the first of which will open by Christmas 2026, along with new slopes and natural ski runs integrated into the terrain.
‍
The goal is to create a cohesive area where skiing starts and ends at your doorstep. With natural elevation changes, fall lines, and connections to the gondola and existing lifts, we are creating the conditions for attractive ski-in/ski-out locations in direct proximity to accommodations and the town center.
At the same time, connections to cross-country tracks and winter trails are being planned, making it easy to head out on an excursion directly from the area, whether you prefer alpine skiing, cross-country, or ski touring.
‍
As Syterbyn takes shape, Hemavan is further strengthened as a destination, with more beds, better accessibility, and a center featuring restaurants, services, and activities. Together, we are creating a modern mountain destination where skiing, nature, and quality of life meet, and where development is carried out with respect for the location and the landscape.
