Nature, Lights and Northern Lights

Nature, light and northern lights in Syterskalet

Hemavan and the surrounding mountain landscape offer an environment where nature’s seasonal shifts are clearly felt throughout the year. Open alpine terrain, mountain birch forests, valleys and waterways meet in a living and expansive landscape. The light changes with the seasons – from the midnight sun of long summer nights to winter’s clear, star-filled skies and the northern lights.

Adjacent to this, Syterskalet is taking shape – an area where nature is an integral part of the experience. Homes and pathways are planned in harmony with the landscape, offering views of the mountains, valleys and the Syter massif. The ambition is to create a place where nature is always close, whether you are out in the mountains or at home.

Nature, Lights and Northern Lights
Midnight sun, mountain lights and the changing of the seasons
During summer, Hemavan is defined by the midnight sun and long, bright days. The light sits low across the mountains, creating soft shadows and extended evenings ideal for hiking, fishing and quiet moments by the water.

Autumn brings crisp days, vibrant colours in the mountain birch forests and a slower pace in the landscape. Winter introduces a different light, with snow reflecting the sky and creating bright days even when the sun is low. Spring in the mountains is clear and luminous, with sunlight on the snow and strong contrasts across the terrain.

Light in Hemavan is an experience in itself, shaping both activities and everyday life in the area.

Northern lights and starry skies over Syterskalet
During the winter months, there are excellent opportunities to experience the northern lights in Hemavan and Syterskalet. The clear air, low light pollution and open landscape provide ideal conditions for seeing the aurora move across the sky.

In Syterskalet, viewpoints and open sightlines are planned to allow clear views of the sky and surrounding mountains from several parts of the area. You may step outside in the evening and be greeted by a star-filled sky, stillness and, under the right conditions, the northern lights dancing above the horizon.

The northern lights are a natural phenomenon that cannot be guaranteed, but conditions in Hemavan Tärnaby are favourable for much of the winter season.
